Na so publicación de referencia mundial, «Limits of oceans and seas» (Llendes d'océanos y mares, 3ª edición de 1953), asígna-y el númberu d'identificación 48 (l) —correspondiente a unu de los mares del archipiélagu de les Indies Orientales (Indonesia)— y definir de la forma siguiente:
