La máxima autoridá internacional en materia de delimitación de mares a efectos de saléu marítimu, la [[Organización Hidrográfica Internacional]] («International Hydrographic Organization, IHO), considera'l mar de la China Oriental (Tung Hai) como un mar. Na so publicación de referencia mundial, «Limits of oceans and sías» (Llendes d'océanos y mares, 3ª edición de 1953), asígna-y el númberu d'identificación 50 y definir de la forma siguiente:
