El 20 de xunetu de 1974, les Fuerces Armaes de Turquía punxeron en marcha una intervención militar d'ocupación de Chipre cola sida d'un golpe d'Estáu que fuera entamáu pola [[Guardia Nacional Chipriota]] contra'l presidente [[Makarios III]] col enfotu d'amestar la islla a [[Grecia]]. La intervención terminó cola ocupación per Turquía d'un área considerable en partir norte de la islla y l'establecimientu d'un gobiernu que namái Turquía reconoz. La intervención producióse dempués de más d'una década d'episodios esporádicos de violencia ente les comunidaes grecochipriotas y turcochipriotas de resultes de la rotura constitucional de 1963.
