El 20 de xunetu de 1974, les Fuerces Armaes de Turquía punxeron en marcha una intervención militar d'ocupación de Chipre cola sida d'un golpe d'Estáu que fuera entamáu pola [[Guardia Nacional Chipriota]] contra'l presidente [[Makarios III]] col enfotu d'amestar la islla a [[Grecia]]. La intervención terminó cola ocupación per Turquía d'un área considerable en partir norte de la islla y l'establecimientu d'un gobiernu que namái Turquía reconoz. La intervención producióse dempués de más d'una década d'episodios esporádicos de violencia ente les comunidaes grecochipriotasgrecoxipriotes y turcochipriotasturcoxipriotes de resultes de la rotura constitucional de 1963. Nel periodu posterior, los turcochipriotasturcoxipriotes declararon una entidá política separada na forma del Estáu turcu de la Federación de Chipre y en 1983 fixo una declaración unillateral d'independencia como la [[República Turca del Norte de Chipre]], que foi reconocida solamente per Turquía. Les [[Naciones Xuníes]] siguen solamente reconociendo la soberanía de la [[República de Chipre]] d'alcuerdu a los términos de la so independencia en 1960.
