Yera fía d'un banqueru francés que foi treslladáu a Estaos Xuníos en 1906, cuando la neña cuntaba con trés años. Apasionada poles obres de Broadway, l'adolescente Claudette empezó a estudiar Arte Dramáticu, y trabayaba nuna tienda de ropa pa pagar les clases.

En 1923, The Wild Wescotts foi la ópera prima nel teatru de Claudette, qu'a partir d'entós adoptó'l nome col que se fixo famosa cuatro años dempués, interpretando The Barker. Tamién en 1927, la moza empezó a collaborar nel cine, pero la so primer película, For the love of Mike foi un fracasu de taquilla y facer volver al teatru.

Cuando volvió al celuloide, en 1929, la so película The Lady Lies foi, otra manera, un enorme ésitu. L'añu anterior, 1928, contraxera matrimoniu col direutor Norman Foster.

Dempués de cinco años d'ésitos cuasi siguíos, Claudette Colbert yá yera una actriz reconocío y respetao nel mundu del cine, pero lo meyor taba entá por llegar. Cleopatra, una de les obres más recordaes de Cecil B. DeMille, en 1934, consagró a l'actriz; pocos meses dempués, It Happened One Night (It Happened One Night), comedia que protagonizó con Clark Gable, fadría que Claudette meter de llenu na historia del cine y que, amás, ganara un Óscar a la meyor actriz.

Un añu dempués, en 1935, divorcióse de Norman Foster, col qu'enxamás conviviera dende'l día del so matrimoniu, pa casase col doctor Joel Pressman. Yá na década de 1940, probó suerte na televisión y como direutora (Texas Lady, 1955). Siguió trabayando en cine y televisión hasta 1987, dedicándose por completu al teatru dende entós y hasta 1992.

El so segundu home finó d'un hepatocarcinoma en 1968.

Finó en Speightstown, Barbados, a los 92 años d'edá dempués de sufrir delles apoplexíes consecutives.
