Biografía editar

El so verdaderu nome yera Warren William Krech, y nació en Aitkin, Minnesota. Estudió na American Academy of Dramatic Arts. En viaxando dende Broadway a Hollywood na dómina del cine mudu, algamó'l so visu como intérprete en filmes de los primeros años de la década de 1930, anteriores al Códigu Hays. Foi artista contratáu de la compañía Warner Bros., y conocíu por interpretar a homes de negociu y abogaos inmorales, según a otros personaxes ensin escupulicios, incluyendo a Sam Spade (renombráu "Ted Shane") nuna versión de El ferre maltés llamada Satan Met a Lady (1936), con Bette Davis.

Sicasí, tamién interpretó a personaxes favorables, como en Imitation of Life (1934), filme nel que yera'l namoráu de Claudette Colbert. Tamién rodó xunto a Colbert Cleopatra (1934), película de Cecil B. DeMille na qu'él yera Xuliu César. Amás, foi D'Artagnan na película de 1939 The Man in the Iron Mask, dirixida por James Whale.

William foi'l primeru n'interpretar na gran pantalla a Perry Mason, personaxe creáu por Erle Stanley Gardner, trabayando en cuatro títulos col mesmu. Tamién foi'l reformáu lladrón de xoyes The Lone Wolf para Columbia Pictures, con un filme llamáu The Lone Wolf Spy Hunt (1939), con Ida Lupino y Rita Hayworth. Asina mesmu foi'l detective Philo Vance nos filmes The Dragon Murder Case (1934) y The Gracie Allen Murder Case (1939), con Gracie Allen.

William finó en 1948 en Hollywood, California, por causa de un mieloma múltiple. Foi encenráu, y les sos cenices espardíes nel Long Island Sound.
