Formar na Academia Americana d'Arte Dramático dempués de la so enseñanza secundaria. En participando en delles obres en Broadway, empezó la so carrera nel cine que de la mano de John Ford na película Cuatro fíos de 1928, que-y abrió les puertes a socesives interpretaciones. Tien una estrella nel Paséu de la Fama de Hollywood, retirar de la interpretación en 1951. Morrió en 1984 por cuenta d'Alzheimer
