Empieza la so carrera en 1963 en ganando un concursu llocal de talentos cerca de Columbus, Ohio, qu'atraxo l'atención del compositor country Bill Anderson.
En grabando delles demos pa Anderson empieza a grabar na RCA Victor Records en 1964.
