Nació en Seaside Heights, New Jersey, y a los dos años d'edá treslladóse a Keansburg, New Jersey. Graduóse na Christian Brothers Academy de Lincroft. Actuó per primer vegada a los diez años en Oliver!, una obra realizada na so ciudá. Solo dos años más tarde, interpretó a Freidrich na obra de Broadway de The Sound of Music. El so debú nel cine foi en Personal Velocity: Three Portraits (2002) de Rebecca Miller. Otres de les películes nes que trabayó son The Chumscrubber, la miniserie Empire Falls y Thumbsucker, pola cual recibió'l "Special Jury Prize" nel Festival de Sundance y l'Osu de Plata nel Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín en 2005. Amás interpretó'l personaxe principal de St. Jimmy nel videoclip de "Jesus of Suburbia" de Green Day.
