Mary Toft

Mary Toft (21 de febreru de 1703, Godalming – 1763, Godalming), tamién llamada Mary Tofts, foi una muyer inglesa de Godalming, Surrey, qu'en 1726 foi oxetu d'un discutiniu considerable cuando engañó a los médicos que creyeron que diera a lluz coneyos.

Toft tuvo embarazada en 1726, pero depués tuvo un albuertu bonal. Aparentemente estelada por un coneyu que viera mientres trabayaba, sostuvo que diera a lluz animal. El ciruxanu local John Howard foi llamáu pa investigar y, n'atopando dellos animales, notificó a otros médicos prominentes. L'asuntu atraxo l'atención de Nathaniel St. André, ciruxanu de la casa real de Xurde I de Gran Bretaña. St. André investigó y concluyó que Toft taba diciendo la verdá. El rei tamién unvió al ciruxanu Cyriacus Ahlers por que viera a Toft, pero Ahlers caltúvose escépticu. Aquel día bastante famosa, Toft foi llevada a Londres, onde foi estudiada a fondura. So intensu escrutiniu y al nun producir más coneyos, finalmente confesó l'engañu y foi subsecuentemente encarcelada.

La burlla pública que siguió creó llerza al interior del oficiu médica. Delles carreres de prominentes ciruxanos fueron arruinaes y produciéronse munchos trabayos satíricos, mordazmente críticos sobre la tema. El satíricu pictóricu y críticu social William Hogarth foi especialmente críticu col oficiu médicu. Toft foi finalmente lliberada ensin cargos y tornó a la so casa.
