Vida y carrera editar

Inicio editar

El so nome completu yera Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives, y nació cerca de Hunt City, Illinois. Los sos padres yeren Levi "Frank" Ives (1880–1947) y Cordelia "Dellie" White (1882–1954), y tuvo seis hermanos: Audry, Artie, Clarence, Argola, Lillburn, y Norma. Siendo neñu, el so tíu oyó-y cantar meintras atopar nel xardín cola so madre. Gustó-y tantu que lu convidó a cantar nuna xunta de veteranos en Hunt City, na cual interpretó una versión de la balada "Barbara Allen", impresionando tanto al so tíu como al públicu.[4]

Ente 1927 y 1929, Ives educar nel Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (anguaño Eastern Illinois University) en Charleston, Illinois,[5] anque abandonó llueu los estudios. Foi arrestáu en Mona (Utah) por vagancia y por cantar “Foggy, Foggy Dew,” cantar que les autoridaes consideraben xubida de tonu.[7] Escontra 1931 empezó a actuar na emisora radiofónica WBOW (AM) de Terre Haute, Indiana. Amás, nesa dómina decidió volver a la escuela, allegando a clase na Indiana State Teachers College (anguaño Indiana State University).[8]

En 1940 Ives empezó'l so propiu show radiofónicu, tituláu The Wayfaring Stranger por cuenta de una de les sos balaes. A lo llargo de la siguiente década popularizó dellos cantares populares, tales como “Foggy, Foggy Dew” (un cantar de raigaños ingleses ya irlandeses), “Blue Tail Fly” (una vieya melodía de la dómina de la Guerra Civil de los Estaos Xuníos), y “Big Rock Candy Mountain” (una antigua cancioncilla vagamunda).

A principios de 1942, Ives foi reclutado pa sirvir nel Exércitu de los Estaos Xuníos. Foi destináu primero a Fort Dix, y dempués a Camp Upton, onde formó parte del repartu del musical d'Irving Berlin This Is the Army. Cuando l'espectáculu pasó a Hollywood, foi tresferíu a les Fuercies Aérees del Exércitu de los Estaos Xuníos. Llicencióse, aparentemente por razones médiques, en setiembre de 1943. Ente setiembre y avientu de 1943 Ives vivió en California col actor Harry Morgan (que se fadría más palantre famosu por interpretar al Coronel Sherman T. Potter na serie televisiva M*A*S*H), y esi mes d'avientu Ives treslladóse a Nueva York pa trabayar na emisora de radio CBS, con un sueldu de 100 dólares selmanales.[9]

El 6 d'avientu de 1945 casóse cola guionista Helen Peck Ehrlich,[10] cola que tuvo un fíu, Alexander, en 1949. El mesmu añu del so matrimoniu foi escoyíu p'actuar como cowboy cantante nel filme Smoky (1945).[11]

El so primer gran ésitu foi la versión que fizo del cantar inglés del sieglu XVII “Lavender Blue”, nomada al Óscar al meyor cantar orixinal pol so usu na película de 1949 Dientro del mio corazón.

Década de 1950: llista negra comunista editar

Ives foi identificáu nel panfletu de 1950 Red Channels y na llista negra de Hollywood como un artista con supuestos llazos comunistes.[12] En 1952 cooperó col Comité d'Actividaes Antiestauxunidenses (HUAC) aceptando testificar. Afirmó nun ser miembru del Partíu Comunista de los Estaos Xuníos, pero que sí allegara a delles xuntes sindicales col cantante Pete Seeger a cencielles pa tar en contautu cola clase trabayadora.

La so cooperación col HUAC sacó-y de la llista negra, dexándo-y siguir trabayando nel cine. Pero tamién-y alloñó d'otros munchos cantantes folk, ente ellos Seeger, que se sentía traicionáu por Ives. Cuarenta y un años dempués, Ives axuntar con Seeger nun conciertu benéficu en Nueva York, cantando xuntos "Blue Tail Fly".[13]

Nesta década Ives amplió les sos actuaciones cinematográfiques. Ente los títulos nos cualos actuó inclúyense East of Eden, La gata sobre'l teyáu de cinc, Desire Under the Elms, Wind Across the Everglades, Horizontes de grandor (filme que-y valió'l Óscar al meyor actor de repartu), y Our Man in Havana, película basada na novela de Graham Greene.

Décades 1960 – 1990 editar

Nos años sesenta Ives empezó a cantar country con mayor frecuencia, y en 1962 editó tres canciones bien populares: "A Little Bitty Tear", "Call Me Mister In-Between", y "Funny Way of Laughing".

Ives fixo dellos papeles televisivu y cinematográficu nos años sesenta y setenta. Asina, en 1962 protagonizó xunto a Rock Hudson The Spiral Road, basada nuna novela de Jan de Hartog. En 1964 trabayó en The Brass Bottle, con Tony Randall y Barbara Eden, y foi'l narrador del especial televisivu de Rankin/Bass en stop motion Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Ives tamién actuó n'otres producciones televisives, ente elles Pinocchio y Raigaños. Amás, foi protagonista de dos series televisives: O.K. Crackerby! (1965–66) y The Bold Ones: The Lawyers (1969–72). Asina mesmu, Ives participó de manera ocasional en producciones de tema macabra, como The Man Who Wanted to Live Forever (1970) y The Other Way Out (1972), esta postrera dientro del show de Rod Serling Galería Nocherniega.

Ives y Helen Peck Ehrlich divorciáronse en febreru de 1971.[14] Dos meses más tarde casóse en Londres con Dorothy Koster Paul.[15] Nos sos últimos años Ives y la so esposa vivieron en Anacortes, Washington, nel área de Puget Sound.

En reconocencia a la so influencia na música vocal estauxunidense, el 25 d'ochobre de 1975 Ives foi gallardoniáu cola Award of Merit del Glee Club de la Universidá de Pennsylvania.[16]

Fallecimientu editar

Ives finó en Anacortes, Washington, por causa de un cáncer de boca, en 1995. Foi soterráu nel Campusantu Mound de Hunt City, Illinois.[17][18]
